# How to verify a locksmith in Missouri

Written by [The LocksmithBro editorial desk](https://locksmithbro.shop/authors/editorial-desk/) Last reviewed 2026-08-17

 Short answer

We found no state locksmith licence in Missouri. Most states do not require one, and where that is true the useful check is not the licence but the address, the vehicle, and an itemised written quote before any work begins.

 This varies by jurisdiction

Licensing and consumer protection rules vary by state and change. Verify with the board or agency listed before relying on this page.

## Missouri

 No state licence is required

We found no statewide locksmith licence in Missouri. Most states do not have one, and saying so plainly is more useful than implying a check exists where it does not.

### What you can verify instead

 - State business registration — the business should exist under the name it gave you.
- A real street address. Search it and look at it in street view.
- A marked vehicle and identification on arrival.
- ALOA membership, which is a trade association and not a government licence.
- An itemised written quote before any work starts.

## Before you let anyone start work

Six things to settle on the phone or at the door. They take about a minute and they are the difference between a fair bill and a bad one.

 - Get the total price in writing, including the service call and any after-hours premium.

 - Ask for the legal business name and the street address, and check the address exists.

 - Ask whether they are licensed in your state, and get the number if they are.

 - Ask what vehicle they will arrive in, and whether it is marked.

 - Confirm they will show identification when they get there.

 - Confirm in writing that they will not drill anything without your explicit approval and a price.

If the price changes when they arrive, you can decline before work begins. You are not obliged to go ahead because someone drove to you.

## Is a locksmith licence required in Missouri?

No, and that is the ordinary situation rather than a gap. Most US states do not license locksmiths, and a page that implies otherwise is sending you to look for a document nobody is required to hold. It is worth being clear about what that does and does not mean. It does not mean anyone may trade without obligation: business registration, consumer protection law and the ordinary rules on deceptive pricing all still apply in Missouri, and an operation that quotes one price and bills another is exposed under those regardless of licensing.

What it does mean is that "are you licensed?" is not a useful screening question here. The questions that are useful are below, and they work in every state including the fifteen that do license.

## What should you check in Missouri before anyone starts?

Four checks, in the order that costs you least to run. Get the legal business name and the street address, then look the address up and switch to street view. This is the single most useful test in the trade, because the pattern being warned about depends on listings that look local and are not. A place of work that does not exist is disqualifying on its own.

Get the total in writing before dispatch, itemised, including the trip and any after-hours premium. Ask what vehicle will arrive and whether it carries the company name. And confirm that nothing will be drilled without your explicit approval and a written price for the replacement.

Because Missouri has no state credential to check, these four are the whole of your verification — which is why getting the number in writing matters more here, not less.

## What can you do in Missouri if you have already been overcharged?

More than most people try, and the order matters. Document first: the invoice, the vehicle, the hardware, the time, and what you were quoted on the phone versus what you were billed. Then dispute the charge with your card issuer rather than arguing with the business — that route exists for card payments and not for cash, which is the practical reason a cash demand at the end of a job is worth refusing.

Then file with the Missouri attorney general's consumer protection office. Every state has one and every one takes complaints about deceptive pricing.

Small claims is realistic for amounts in this range and does not require a lawyer. The full sequence is on the [dispute page](https://locksmithbro.shop/rights/dispute-a-charge/).

## Why do other sites list Missouri differently?

Because almost all of them are copying the same list, and the list is out of date. Fifteen states are commonly cited as licensing locksmiths. We checked each one directly rather than repeating the citation, and the list does not survive contact: Nebraska repealed its county registration requirement in 2021, Tennessee repealed its licensing act, and Nevada does not license locksmiths at state level at all. Three of fifteen were wrong.

That is not a small error on a page whose entire purpose is telling you what to verify. It sends people to check credentials that do not exist, and it makes a legitimate technician in a deregulated state look evasive for not producing one.

Our full matrix, with what we could and could not confirm for each state, is on the [licensing overview](https://locksmithbro.shop/licensing/). Where we could not retrieve a board URL ourselves, we say so instead of linking it.

## Why we retrieve every link ourselves

A broken or wrong link on a page telling you to verify something is worse than no link at all. So we only link a board address when we requested it directly and confirmed it, and we say when. Where we could not, the card above says so and names the agency instead so you can go to it directly.
